LA PERLA

LA PERLA

OCTOBER 6 ⩥ La Perla /w Gaia Roots + Peace & Rhythm DJs in Easthampton

afro-colombian rhythms with punk rock attitude

In Colombia’s capital of Bogota, La Perla are sometimes referred to as the Three Drum Witches — they’re a one-of-a-kind vocal and drum trio with powerful lyricism, charged lyrics, and a cross-pollinated expression of Lat-Am genres such as cumbia, bullerengue, merengue, gaita, chalupa, samba and champeta.

This ain't your mama's drum trio, and it ain't what we used to call world music.  It's three powerful modern women playing original music influenced by and based in the folklore of their country, layered with the urban elements of contemporary Bogota and the international influences of hip-hop and rock n’ roll.

MUSIC & RESISTANCE

La Perla came of age in difficult times. The song “Guayabo” is a scathing indictment against Colombia’s state violence, set against the backdrop of the cazerolasos and chaos of Colombia’s general strike in 2021.

They don’t shy away from singing about the harsh conditions that laborers experience in the fields, the “bleeding devastation of the Amazon", or the mistreatment of Indigenous culture. Nor are they silent on the assassination of ecological and social leaders fighting for justice and equal rights.

Their punk-rock attitude and spirited protest songs are shaking stages globally. The trio have toured extensively through Europe, and current collaborations include cuts with Nubya Garcia, Son Rompe Pera, and Mexican Institute of Sound.

CUMBIA, Easthampton.

We’re bringing la fiesta to Easthampton on a Friday night. Peace & Rhythm DJs Studebaker Hawk and DJ Bongohead spin before, between and after the live sets in one of Easthampton’s oldest/newest rooms — the Blue Room, formerly Flywheel — now powered by CitySpace.

DJs hit at 7PM. Gaia Roots kicks us off at 8PM with a high-energy percussive set that connects the dots between Africa and Latin America.

It’s an all ages, mostly standing room show, and CitySpace will be providing a bar for the evening.

(Due to limited seating, I recommend you send me a note if you’d like seats reserved)
