ALASH ENSEMBLE & GARTH STEVENSON
Alash is a trio of master throat singers from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. Grounded in tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West, the ensemble and its individual members have consistently won top honors on the world’s highest stages.
Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage. They’ve collaborated with such diverse acts as the Sun Ra Arkestra, the virtuoso beatboxer Shodekeh, and bluegrass visionaries Béla Fleck & The Flecktones.
Secret Planet bestie Garth Stevenson opens the show. His approach to composition is a kind of musical rewilding — nature is the primary inspiration for his minimalist ouvre, and his three full-length solo albums are informed by his experiences carrying his 150-year-old double bass to the woods, beach, desert and other remote locations including Antarctica and Tuva. He’s been tight with Alash Ensemble for a very long time.
