UNDERGROUND SYSTEM

SATURDAY NIGHT

The multi-culti, electro-disco, post-afrobeat, retro-futurist, baile funk, Yes-Wave global dance punk band of your dreams. Led by flautist Domenica Fossati, an Italian-American hailing from Miami via Venezuela whose energy channels David Byrne and Fela Kuti about evenly.

KOKOKO!

FRIDAY NIGHT

The soundtrack of Kinshasa’s tomorrow. The duo of Congolese vocalist Makara Bianko and French producer Débruit came together in 2018, in the explosive ferment of the Kinshasan DIY arts scene. Their music rings of the Congolese city, but also of Kwaito and 90s dance music generally.

GARTH STEVENSON

SATURDAY DAY — music meditation hike

Garth’s approach to composition is a kind of musical rewilding — nature is the primary inspiration for his minimalist ouvre, and his three full-length solo albums are informed by his experiences carrying his 150-year-old double bass to the woods, beach, desert and other remote locations including Antarctica and Tuva.

BIGYUKI (solo)

SATURDAY SUNSET + NIGHT

Japanese keyboardist and songwriter Masayuki Hirano (Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, Kamasi Washington) bends genres into a pretzel with his electronica-laced jazz, hip-hop, and classical explorations. He’s back this year with two solo sets — one for the sunset hour and one for the late night.

LA LULU

SATURDAY NIGHT

Spicy without pepper. Hotter than a volcano. Triple threat : vocalist, dancer and Latin Grammy award winner violinist.First of her name. Meet La Lulu. Ninguna simplona. Think Nathy Peluso or Noga Erez gone Amazonian psychotropic.

PETER MATSON & BONI TRAXTON

The creative duo behind Underground System (Razor-N-Tape) are both hip-deep in the NYC dance scene as DJs/selectors. They close out the Weekender on Saturday night in the social club.

DEEJAY THEORY
